Ingredients
  

  • 2.5 lbs potatoes peeled and chopped
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 0.75 cup heavy cream warmed
  • 0.5 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup shredded cheese optional
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1.5 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper

Equipment

  • Large pot
  • Potato masher
  • Mixing bowl
  • Baking dish

Method
 

  1. Boil potatoes in salted water until fork-tender. Drain well.
  2. Mash potatoes and let steam escape for 1–2 minutes.
  3. Mix in butter, cream, sour cream, garlic, salt, and pepper.
  4. Fold in cheese if using.
  5. Transfer to greased baking dish and dot with butter.
  6. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 25–30 minutes until golden.

Notes

Can be made ahead and baked before serving.
