Base
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1.5 tsp baking powder
  • 0.25 tsp salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
Lemon Layer
  • 1 cup lemon juice fresh
  • 1 tbsp lemon zest
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1.5 cups hot water

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and melt butter in baking dish.
  2. Mix flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add milk and vanilla to form batter.
  4. Pour batter over melted butter without stirring.
  5. Mix lemon juice, zest, and sugar, then pour over batter.
  6. Pour hot water over everything without mixing.
  7. Bake 40–45 minutes until golden on top.

Notes

Do not stir layers to achieve the magic effect.
