- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans, line bottoms with parchment.
- Sift together flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and espresso powder in a large bowl.
- Whisk buttermilk, oil, eggs, and vanilla in another bowl until combined.
- Gradually add wet mixture to dry, mixing on low until incorporated.
- Slowly pour in hot coffee while mixing; batter will be thin. Divide among pans.
- Bake 30-35 minutes until toothpick comes out clean. Cool in pans 10 minutes, then on wire racks.
- For frosting: Beat butter until creamy. Sift in cocoa and powdered sugar alternately with milk.
- Add vanilla and salt; beat until fluffy. Assemble cake layers with frosting, then frost exterior.
Notes
For best results, use room-temperature ingredients and don't overbake for moist crumb.
