Mom's Authentic Puerto Rican Rice & Beans

A classic Puerto Rican family recipe with fluffy seasoned yellow rice and tender pink beans simmered in sofrito, tomato sauce, and sazón. Warm, comforting, and full of authentic Latin flavor.

Ingredients
  

Beans
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 0.5 cup sofrito
  • 0.5 onion diced
  • 0.5 green bell pepper diced
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 can pink beans with liquid
  • 0.5 cup tomato sauce
  • 1 packet sazón
  • 0.5 tsp adobo
  • 0.5 tsp oregano
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 cup water add more as needed
Rice
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 cups long grain rice
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp sazón
  • 1 tbsp sofrito

Equipment

  • Large pot
  • Saucepan
  • Wooden spoon

Method
 

  1. Heat olive oil and sauté sofrito, onion, garlic, and bell pepper.
  2. Add tomato sauce, sazón, adobo, oregano, and bay leaf.
  3. Stir in pink beans with liquid and water; simmer 20–30 minutes.
  4. For the rice, sauté rice in olive oil for 1 minute.
  5. Add water, salt, sazón, and sofrito; bring to a boil.
  6. Cover and simmer 18 minutes; rest 10 minutes before fluffing.

Notes

If beans thicken too much, add water. Rice can be seasoned with extra sofrito for deeper flavor.
