- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 8-inch cake pans.
- Whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Beat softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add eggs one at a time, followed by oil and vanilla extract.
- Mix in orange zest and fresh orange juice.
- Alternate adding dry ingredients and buttermilk until just combined.
- Stir in orange food coloring if using.
- Divide batter into pans and bake 28–32 minutes.
- Cool completely on a rack.
- Beat cream cheese and butter until smooth.
- Add powdered sugar gradually.
- Mix in orange zest, juice, and vanilla until fluffy.
- Frost between cake layers and coat the outside.
Notes
For deeper citrus flavor, use double the zest or add 1 tsp orange extract.
